Psychologist at Large

Questions and Answers: Conditions

What This Column Is, and Is Not

Since I began writing “Psychologist At Large” in 1997, many readers have sent questions which present issues of general interest, some of which I’ve discussed in columns. So, it seems that a column devoted to questions and answers might be of use and worth a try. The purpose of this question and answer column is to provide a forum in which to consider issues suggested by readers which may be of interest and value to readers in general.

This column is not a place to get therapy or diagnosis. I do not practice therapy or diagnosis over the net, period. Without a real working relationship, such as I discuss in several of my columns, therapy and diagnosis as I practice them are not possible. I only practice psychotherapy and diagnostic evaluation in my office, in the context of an ongoing professional relationship. Similarly, when I provide organizational consultation, it is in the context of an ongoing relationship with an organization.

This is absolutely not the place to bring acute or emergency situations. People in such situations should seek professional help in person from a local mental health professional. Also, please do not submit questions asking for a private answer. That is effectively asking for a private consultation, which I don’t provide over the net.

It is my impression that there is a widespread and growing interest in, and awareness of, issues to do with human nature and relationships. This column is one attempt to contribute to this process.
