Psychologist at Large

About This Site

Reviewing the book, Edmund Wilson:   A Life in Literature, the Economist (Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 2005) said, "He belonged to a literary species that, many believe, no longer exists:  the free-ranging generalist who wrote seriously about books and ideas for the common reader without dumbing down."  Although I’m not familiar with Wilson’s work, this comment rings a note close to what I'm trying to achieve with psychatlarge.com.  If the Economist's statement was modified to:  "A free-ranging psychologist writing seriously about whatever catches his interest for the common reader without dumbing down," that comes pretty close to my heart's desire for psychatlarge.com. A lot of what I write about will concern psychotherapy, education, learning disabilities, and related topics, because these are the areas of my professional focus. But I’ve given myself carte blanch to write about anything. My lifelong interests in human nature and behavior are practical, and transcend the exclusively scientific and professional. They extend to economics, politics, family, community, media, art, religion, spirituality, and human relationships everywhere and of all kinds.

Philip Zimbardo, the eminent social psychologist, author of The Shy Child (ishkbooks.com/malor/), and past President of the American Psychological Association, emphasized, during his A.P.A. presidency, the importance of "giving Psychology away."  What he meant was, making the discoveries of psychology available outside the boundaries of scientific and professional psychology.  Psychatlarge.com, aims to make a contribution here, too.

Psychatlarge.com isn't a blog.  A good blog has to be written almost daily, or at least very frequently, by a writer who can write pretty well on first draft.  I haven't the time to write daily, and prefer to redraft most of what I've written before posting. I’m aiming for a level of depth that’s greater than the relative superficiality of most news and opinion writing, but less than that required for a professional article, chapter, or book. I feel that there’s a niche to make a contribution somewhere in between the two.

I have a behavior modification goal for myself, too, because psychatlarge.com is partly a device to keep myself writing.

"The Current Column” is a space for longer pieces.  "Reflections, Ruminations and Rants" is a space for short thoughts and reflections.  "Questions and Answers" provides a space for me to reply to questions which might interest the general reader. I’m interested in readers’ thoughts and responses, which can be emailed to me through the Questions and Answers section, although I can’t always reply.

Drew Richardson (dramaticfool.com), a professional fool (unlike the rest of us, who are just amateurs), helps me with the technical stuff.
